Rexburg Culture

Understanding local traditions, LDS culture, and what makes Rexburg unique for new BYU-Idaho students.

Welcome to Rexburg

Rexburg is a small college town in Eastern Idaho, dominated by BYU-Idaho. The culture here is unique - shaped by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), which owns and operates the university. Understanding this culture will help you thrive during your time here.

LDS Culture in Rexburg

Understanding the Community

Rexburg is one of the most LDS-concentrated communities in the world. The vast majority of students, faculty, and residents are active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This shapes everything from business hours to social activities.

  • Sunday observance - Most businesses close on Sundays as residents observe the Sabbath
  • Word of Wisdom - No alcohol, coffee, tobacco, or vaping products sold in town
  • Modest dress - The community dresses conservatively; the Honor Code has dress standards
  • Clean language - Profanity is uncommon and frowned upon

Ward Life

You'll be assigned to a "ward" (congregation) based on where you live. Ward activities are a major social outlet and a great way to make friends.

  • • Sunday services (3-hour block)
  • • FHE (Family Home Evening) on Mondays
  • • Ward activities and service projects
  • • Break the Fast dinners

The Rexburg Temple

The Rexburg Idaho Temple is a prominent landmark. Temple grounds are open for walking and reflection, and the temple hosts activities for endowed members.

  • • Beautiful grounds for photos
  • • Open for temple-worthy members
  • • Regular temple trips organized by wards

For Non-LDS Students

While BYU-Idaho is an LDS university, students of all faiths are welcome. Non-LDS students should be aware of and respect the Honor Code, which includes standards of conduct, dress, and grooming that apply to everyone. Many non-LDS students find the community welcoming and appreciate the wholesome environment.
