Understanding the Track System

BYU-Idaho operates year-round with three semesters. Students are assigned to one of three tracks, attending two semesters per year. This lets the university serve 50% more students than traditional schools.

Track 1

Fall + Winter

The most popular track. Traditional school year with summer off.

Pros

  • + Home for summer
  • + Most class options
  • + Traditional schedule

Cons

  • - Experience both cold semesters
  • - More competition for housing

Track 2

Winter + Spring

Skip the coldest month (December) and enjoy summer in Rexburg.

Pros

  • + Fewer students in spring
  • + Enjoy Rexburg summer
  • + Avoid December cold

Cons

  • - Away from family for holidays
  • - Some classes less available

Track 3

Fall + Spring

Best of both worlds with the longest winter break.

Pros

  • + Best weather semesters
  • + Long December break
  • + Skip coldest months

Cons

  • - Hardest to find housing
  • - Some class sequences disrupted

Class Registration Tips

Popular classes and preferred time slots fill quickly. Be prepared!

1

Before Registration Opens

  • Meet with your academic advisor
  • Map out your required courses for the semester
  • Research professors on Rate My Professors
  • Create a list of backup courses
  • Have Course Registration Numbers (CRNs) ready
2

Registration Day

  • Log in 5 minutes before your window opens
  • Use multiple browser tabs for efficiency
  • Register for hardest-to-get classes first
  • Join waitlists for full classes immediately
  • Check your schedule for conflicts
3

After Registration

  • Keep checking waitlists - students drop classes
  • Buy textbooks early for best prices
  • Locate all your classrooms before Day 1
  • Set up your I-Learn for each course
  • Review syllabi when available

Schedule Building Strategies

Know Your Peak Hours

Schedule difficult classes when you're most alert. Morning person? Take calculus at 8am. Night owl? Avoid early classes.

Build in Study Gaps

Leave 1-2 hour gaps between classes for studying. Back-to-back classes leave no time to review or prepare.

Balance Difficulty

Don't take organic chemistry, statistics, and advanced writing in the same semester. Mix challenging courses with lighter ones.

Plan for Finals

Check when finals are scheduled. Having three finals on the same day is brutal - consider shifting a class.

What to Do During Your Off-Track Semester

Don't waste your semester off! Here are productive ways to spend it:

Full-Time Work

Save money for upcoming semesters

Internship

Gain experience in your field

Online Courses

Get ahead on credits from home

Study Abroad

Volunteer Service

Personal Projects

Common Planning Mistakes to Avoid

Ignoring Prerequisites

Fix: Map your entire degree path first. Some classes are only offered once a year.

Overloading First Semester

Fix: Start with 12-14 credits while adjusting to college life.

Procrastinating Registration

Fix: Set an alarm. Popular classes fill in minutes, not hours.

Not Having Backups

Fix: Always have 2-3 alternative classes if your first choices are full.

Ignoring Advisor Meetings

Fix: Advisors catch issues early and know about hidden opportunities.
